ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Lofquist’s theory of the Spectrum of Attitudes. Understanding one’s own attitude toward others, in particular, to those who will benefit from the project is important to our relationship and behavior with other people. Our attitudes towards those we are trying to help will help those who are leading a change process to determine their perspectives toward those meant to benefit from the change. In addition, when beneficiaries of a change are viewed, respected and involved, greater self-esteem and productivity can result. An inventory of attitudes is available in the Appendix to help determine individuals reflect on differences that result from variations in ideas, perspectives, and approaches to solving problems. A sense of “otherness” can result from our different social identities including cultural, racial and economic differences.
