ABSTRACT

Symptoms of a problem in our community or organization alert us that something isn’t right. This chapter covers how to describe a need or opportunity, how to select a high-priority, high-yield need to address possible causes, ideal outcome(s) and indicators that can be used to measure the progress of a project. Facilitation techniques are introduced such as using the inquiry of “what’s happening now” to collectively search for symptoms, develop a hypothesis and locate and establish indicators of success. Various methods are described for coming to a decision such as brainstorming, multi-voting to reduce the long list of proposed, and a consensus process.
