ABSTRACT

This chapter concerns facilitation techniques for observation and monitoring once a meeting has begun, including:

Observing to determine the best way to get things flowing, such as using introductions and icebreakers.

Observing to determine how to keep the energy flowing with a particular group.

Observing to see who is engaged and who is not, so you can include and involve all participants.

Observing to determine when to summarize progress.

Monitoring discussions and intervening when absolutely necessary.

Much of the observation done during facilitation is of nonverbal behaviors such as facial expressions, eye contact, gestures, postures and body movements.
