ABSTRACT

Changing the environment can be carried out to improve safety or access, encourage interaction, enhance a sense of community and many other purposes. The physical environment can include the natural and built environments as well as infrastructure such as stormwater filtration. Changes can be either large scale, such as cleanup of toxic waste, or small scale, such as repairing playgrounds, improving transportation by adding bike racks to public transportation or improving accessibility of public meeting spaces through entry ramps. This chapter focuses on small-scale environment change by creating concept plans that detail who should be involved in making the change and when.

This chapter covers how to make plans for modifying the physical environment, including determining who should be involved in planning for a project, describing what should be included in a concept plan for modifying the physical environment and describing the timing and actions needed in planning small-scale changes to the physical environment.
