ABSTRACT

An initiative or organization is sustainable when it can continue to work toward the vision and mission without depleting the resources that support it. To achieve change without regressing to earlier behaviors, the practices of change initiatives must become integrated into mind-sets and behaviors rather than simply added on top of all the other things that people need to do. People involved need to believe in the benefits of the change to make a commitment to the new way of doing things. Because conditions are continually changing, the change initiative needs to be flexible enough to accommodate the new conditions. An organization or community group that plans to continue into the future will also need good leaders to renew the organization to meet changed conditions. This chapter covers creating a plan to develop future leaders that can manage as well as lead. It also:

Describes strategies for sustaining an initiative.

Describes the strategies used by leaders who can lead a change process as conditions change.

Lists strategies to renew an organization in the face of changed conditions.

Covers how to create an action plan for leadership development for yourself.
