A partnership of international initiatives involved with many aspects of sustainability, led by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the World Health Organisation, set up the ‘THE PEP’. This stands for Transport, Health, Environment Pan-European Programme, an outcome of the recognition of the massive impacts of travel on the health of our species and our planet. The health concerns include anything from those of businesses frustrated by the loss of productivity resulting from days off work and traffic congestion, to city authorities that have woken up to the fact that the air in their streets is toxic. The most immediate priority for health professionals is to identify and treat the diseases from which we suffer; the primary focus of their essential work remains within the realm of illness.
