The spatial considerations relating to community empowerment are interwoven with the motivation of the local inhabitants to shape their environments. The dynamics of community empowerment are influenced by the different personalities who have a stake in a given area. The involvement of communities is activated when they see the potential for their immediate environments to be enhanced. A community that has developed in the fertile soil of a healthy urban infrastructure also needs well-designed public buildings and external spaces in which to hold meetings and events when going about its business. Inequality is one of the most divisive aspects of the increasingly materialistic environments in which so many people live. The community empowerment that is opened up by the participatory planning process is a positive experience that is refreshingly new to most of those who attend. Strengthen community cohesion by encouraging people in need of help to sign up for ‘bottom-up’ support schemes such as asset-based community development and time-banking.
