ABSTRACT

Lasting change means forming habits: responding automatically to the situation. Habits, however, take time and effort to create. Students may stop if they don’t see the value of continuing. Teachers can track students’ progress and offer feedback to encourage further action. Teachers can offer extrinsic rewards – these should be a pleasant surprise for a specific action. Teachers can also help students to recognise what they are achieving. If students don’t feel they belong, teachers can help build their sense of identity, as successful and of belonging to the community. Finally, teachers can adapt and relaunch the habit until it sticks.
