ABSTRACT

Teachers may need students to stop doing things. If students are doing many undesirable things, teachers can prioritize those that are most problematic. Teachers can discourage the action, by highlighting immediate consequences, role models who have improved, and social norms, and by using sanctions. If students are acting habitually, however, this may not be enough. In this case, teachers can disrupt the habit, by changing the situation in which it’s performed, and by making it harder to perform the action.
