ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the analysis of the effect of the AKP on Turkish politics and how the party had adopted a wide range of strategies to control the Turkish military and security establishments. The chapter begins by discussing the effects of EU Accession talks on civil-military relations in Turkey in addition to discussing the economic power of the Turkish military that is usually considered as a hindrance in the way of imposing civilian control. Moreover, the changing mindset of the military top brass since 2002 is illustrated, and the tensions between the AKP governments and the military is discussed. The chapter then analyzes the context of the coup attempt in July 2016 and how it differs from the previous coups and coup attempts in the modern Turkish history and if it will impact civil-security relations in Turkey.
