ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses seafarer retention and remuneration. It starts with looking at the importance of seafarer retention and examining the challenges, given the working and living conditions on ships discussed in Chapter 6. It also explores what attracts seafarers to go to sea and what encourages them to stay. As remuneration is a major factor that makes the seafaring career attractive, the chapter will then move on to discussing international regulations on employment conditions and benefits, such as wages and pensions, and to examining industrial practices in reality. In the end, this chapter explores factors that improve seafarer competence and promote job satisfaction and organisational commitment in shipping. It shows that the key factor is a generous investment from shipping companies in training and continuous professional development of employees.
