ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 examines performance management. In shipping, there are industry-wide performance standards. One, the shipping KPI system, was initiated by the industry to help individual shipping companies monitor and benchmark their performances against their previous records as well as the industry average. The second system is the TMSA (Tanker Management Self-Assessment) programme, which is imposed by the oil majors on oil shipping companies to manage performance. This chapter explains these two systems and shows that they encourage good HRM practices in shipping. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is also examined in this chapter and the examination shows that it emphasises environmental issues more than HR ones. At the end, the chapter discusses the common practice of appraisals, in which individual seafarers are appraised by their seniors. It shows that while in some cases such appraisals achieve the objective of identifying training needs, in most cases, they are used as confidential reports to control seafarers.
