ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 consists of a sample lesson on healthy relationships. Lessons in healthy relationships delivered to the special education classroom typically include activities that help describe and illustrate what relationships are, and discussions and exercises that explain the different kinds of relationships people have with one another. Typically, these lessons also include helping students recognize the relationships in their own lives and the different dynamics that define each of those relationships. The lesson featured in this chapter guides teachers through developing key messages for students, defining relationships (including healthy and unhealthy relationships) for students, helping students understand their relationship circles, and facilitating students in completing the Heart of Relationships activity. The chapter also provides strategies for tailoring the lesson to students with varying abilities.
