ABSTRACT
Chapter 7 consists of stories of families who have worked to provide the young people with developmental disabilities in their lives with lessons in comprehensive sex education. The chapter discusses the challenges such families face, but it also discusses the successes they’ve achieved in preparing their children for a healthy sexual life, and for life as self-advocates. The chapter also offers examples of young people who may have learned about topics in a comprehensive sex education in childhood, but who continue to learn the basics of healthy sexuality as they mature into adults. Finally, the chapter closes with the voices of young people and adults with developmental disabilities who give their perspectives on their own experiences learning about healthy relationships, safe and appropriate boundaries, and other categories in a comprehensive sex education.
