ABSTRACT

A lot of safety precautions are just common sense more consciously considered and practiced. Sets are often full of people making it difficult to move around with equipment. Dangers abound such as flying framed soft goods overhead on exterior sets. Ladders, lift gates on trucks, hot lights and other dangers require careful attention while working. Backing trucks up is one of the more common accident scenarios. Making cable on the ground, both inside and for exteriors, is a priority for electricians. Working long hours and being sleep-deprived is dangerous and unfortunately common on features. Working conditions should be negotiated ahead of time. A deal memo can summarize the pay rates and other details for the crew such as meal times, drive-time, turnaround, etc. Some locales have gone to a 12-hour workday rate. Here in San Francisco we are insisting upon a 10-hour rate with overtime after that.
