ABSTRACT

Important words to know are watts, volts, and amps. The single most important formula is amps = watts/volts. Counting amps is important when distributing power around a film set. Duplexes are wall outlets for lights with Edison plugs. The wiring of duplexes may not be easily deciphered. 20-amp circuits can often be found at garbage disposals, washer machine outlets, and garage door openers. Kitchens may also have several 20-amp circuits. Watch out for GFIs – they may trip additional duplexes down the line. 25’ and 50’ extension cords are the norm, often 12/3 for maximum amperage draw. Avoid cord pullouts by tying cords together. Zip cord is very lightweight and can only carry 10 amps. Taping cords down or using cable cross-overs, also called Yellow Jackets, is very important. An electrical tester or meter is useful for film electricians.
