ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a rule for learning tricky spellings. The rule states that the letters e and s are added to words ending with hissing sounds like ch, s, sh, x and z when becoming plurals or verb agreements e.g. many churches or she dashes. The chapter presents an exercise for learners to read out loud some words ending in 'es' using the rule. It provides clues and pictures for learners to spell some words ending in 'es' by using the rule. The chapter also includes an activity for the learners to rewrite some words into the correct order in a sentence by adding one of the missing ‘es’ words to complete each sentence.
