ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a rule for learning tricky spellings. The rule states that the letter name ‘a’ can be used as a word to introduce most nouns. It is a determiner and helps us to know what is coming next e.g. a beautiful dress. The letters a and n join together as ‘an’ to introduce nouns beginning with vowel sounds. The word ‘an’ is a determiner and helps us to know what is coming next e.g. an orange or an elegant lady. The chapter presents an exercise for learners to read out loud some words having determiners ‘a’ and ‘an’ using the rule. It provides clues and pictures for learners to spell some words having determiners ‘a’ and ‘an’ by using the rule. The chapter also includes an activity for the learners to rewrite some words into the correct order in a sentence by adding the missing ‘a’ or ‘an’ determiners to complete the sentence.
