ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a rule for learning tricky spellings. The rule states that the letter i comes before e except after c when we hear the e’s name e.g. receive and deceive. In most exceptions to this rule, we hear ‘a’s name e.g. neighbour or weigh. The chapter presents an exercise for learners to read out loud some words spelt with i before e except after c. It provides clues and pictures for learners to spell some words having ‘i’ before ‘e’ by using the rule. The chapter also includes an activity for the learners to rewrite some words into the correct order in a sentence by adding the missing ‘i’ before ‘e’ words to complete the sentence.
