ABSTRACT

On a more global level, there are continuous debates about customers’ data being analyzed by governments. This chapter mainly focuses on privacy. It discusses what privacy entails and how customers consider privacy issues. The chapter also discusses the role of governments and, more specifically, legislation. The strong disconnect between privacy concern and actual behavior is referred to as the “privacy paradox.” In addition, the chapter elaborates on big data privacy policies. Beyond data legislation, firms should be aware that the resulting actions derived from their data usage are also affected by laws. The “moral intensity” of an ethical issue, such as privacy, refers to the magnitude of the consequences of the actions and the probability of it arising, as well as whether the consequences are concentrated on a group of people or dispersed among them. The chapter finally considers data security.
