ABSTRACT

The identity of the author of this novel remains a mystery. The book itself quickly disappeared into obscurity because it lacked sufficient attributes to make it part of any literary cannon. Critics applauded the writer’s “knowledge of the manners of the world”, but they found the plot far too intricate and abrupt in its shifts. 10 Such criticism remains valid, but this novel deserves attention for its romantic portrayal of a soldier and his family after his discharge from the army. Though it originally came out in two volumes published in 1791, the existence of this 1792 single-volume edition indicates that it had some popularity, if short-lived.
