ABSTRACT

The expert insight for this chapter is provided by CEO and co-founder of Life After Hate, Sammy Rangel, while a case study of Donald Woods, former Editor of the South African anti-apartheid newspaper the Daily Dispatch, demonstrates the true power of transformational leadership. Transformational leadership constitutes four separate behaviours: charisma (or idealized influence); inspirational motivation; individual consideration; and intellectual stimulation. Bass and Steidlmeier's authentic transformational leadership theoretical framework extended the work of Burns' and Bass's seminal work in the area of transformational leadership. As the reader will realize by the end of this case study, it is incredible to note the ideological journey that Woods traversed from socialized, conservative and racist to one of the strongest and intellectually reasoned anti-apartheid voices in South Africa. Woods was awarded several honorary doctorates and a CBE by Queen Elizabeth in 2000 in recognition for his services to human rights.
