ABSTRACT

In this short concluding chapter, we review some of the criticisms of the genealogical craze and revisit its positive and beneficial aspects for practitioners and their families. We summarise the major motives and characteristics of family historians, as depicted in published literature and from our own study. Finally we briefly consider some challenges for the future, including the possibility of ‘information overload’ and the difficulties likely to arise in charting family histories in the light of changing views of privacy, gender and families.
