ABSTRACT

The primary perceptual feature of vision is the dynamic among the elements. When considering the composition of digital screens, it is important to establish whether the goal of an image is to maximize the reality effect or to prompt the viewer's suspension of disbelief. As digital screen viewers, the people are positioned in relationship to what is depicted as if they were analog audiences faced with the proscenium arch. Visual conventions used in pie charts, line graphs, interactive and emotive illustrations, and the like, are commonly a part of digital screens. This chapter discusses composition and conventions, what might be considered the grammar or syntax of the visual. For educators, incorporating visual literacy throughout the curriculum while making productive, minds-on use of digital screens in teaching are undergirded and steered by the digital literacy components discussed and which constitutes the basis for subsequent exploration of digital screens in teaching and learning.
