ABSTRACT

Higher education systems have undergone intense transformation and have experienced, especially in the second half of the 20th century, extraordinary expansion. Higher education has gained growing importance in promoting change and solving social and economic problems, now integrating the set of issues considered to be priority and strategic for the development of nations and peoples. The impact of the new processes in higher education is felt and questioned differently in the various countries, due to their history and location in the world system, their education systems, their organization, or their ability to react, to mobilize resources and to implement relevant policies.
