ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses when and how to select students dissertation committee members, the criteria to consider for their selection, the best way to involve them during the dissertation process, when to give committee members a copy of students proposal, how to consult with them after they have received it, and the possible involvement of other advisors and consultants. University graduate divisions and psychology departments have specific requirements for the number of persons on a committee and their status relevant to the institution, discipline, area, and department. University and program policies sometimes allow a student to exceed the minimum number of committee members, and this might be an appropriate way to recognize additional persons who will contribute significantly to students’ dissertation. Some doctoral programs require that the committee include a “methodologist.” In most cases, a prospective committee member will be happy to serve on students committee. However, there are many reasons why the person might decline.
