ABSTRACT

This chapter offers several strategies to help students write competently and clearly. A helpful way to preserve students writing time is to put it into their paper or electronic schedule. Once it is in their schedule, it becomes clear when they are available and when they are not, thus ensuring that they must consider their writing time before scheduling other activities. It can be helpful to develop an extensive outline of any section of the dissertation that students are writing, complete with references attached to the major points of that section. One option is to use the “Outline” function in the software they use for their writing. Dissertation requirements will vary across programs, dissertation advisors, and topics. The same is true regarding the length of the introduction to students’ thesis/dissertation. The organization and focus of their dissertation, especially the introduction, can be strengthened if they use subheadings in all major sections.
