ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 considers Darwin’s creation of the theory of evolution through natural selection. It draws extensively on the insights of Howard Gruber who did a pioneering study of Darwin’s notebooks in the period when Darwin was putting together his evolution theory. Gruber constructed a step-by-step account of Darwin’s changing thinking and put forward concepts which capture features of Darwin’s work, concepts which continue to provide tools for studying episodes of the creative process. The chapter supplements Gruber’s presentation with help of primary sources and two excellent biographies in telling Darwin’s story, sources that throw additional light on the emotional aspects of his creative experience.
