ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 is based on qualitative interviews with four contemporary fiction writers. The similarity in their stories suggested a tentative account of their fiction writing. Among the interview highlights was a striking change in their descriptions. First they spoke about what they wanted or planned to do using the word I. Then they spoke of a flow that took the form of the story was happening to them, their fingers writing without conscious control. As their writing unfolded, they told of being surprised by what the characters were doing and by unexpected events. Following Schütz, the writers had entered a mode of experience outside the everyday, a fiction world. His multiple reality framework provided tools for analyzing the features of the fiction world in contrast with those of an everyday world of action and a reflective writing realm.
