ABSTRACT

Chapter 1 ‘Historical Insights of Education in Colonial Bengal, 1757–1911’ traces the historical trajectory of British rule in Bengal from 1757 to 1911, from the occupation of Bengal till the shift of the imperial capital to Delhi, to analyse the educational policies and its implementations. As education began to be considered necessary in conjunction with the imperial agency, there were new ways to formulate a radical change in the image of the English rulers. The chapter aims to objectively study the historical evolution of the ‘modern’ colonial education system by analysing the educational policies followed in colonial Bengal, as was framed by the Committee of Public Instruction and William Adam’s Reports on the State of Education in Bengal.
