ABSTRACT

Comparing Kurundwad with Malegaon, Mumbai, Miraj, Sangli, and Urun Islampur, we gain deeper insights into the reasons why Hindus and Muslims participate in each other’s cultural events in Kurundwad despite the growing influence of religious fundamentalism. Such comparisons bolster the idea that social hierarchy and interdependence are the glue that holds Hindus and Muslims together. Several other factors, such as political competition and economic development, interact with the two factors mentioned above (hierarchy and interdependence) to shape the Hindu-Muslim relations in Maharashtra.
