ABSTRACT

This chapter overviews the ethnographic study of male interactional identities in Club Fingal, a suburban sports—Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA)—club. Club Fingal is part of a nationwide organization built around local community networks, which primarily focus on the playing of Gaelic football and hurling. The chapter first provides details about the context of Dublin and Club Fingal. I outline fundamental issues regarding identity and language (section 1.1.), and what we know about this in Dublin. The second section includes an outline about important points relating to the setting of the club. The focus is on how individuals position their identity, exploring the role of language in the process. Section three provides a synopsis of the aims, methods, and results and is followed by a chapter-by-chapter summary of the book.
