ABSTRACT

Linked to the concept of identity as a process, and the way that group identities can readily incorporate similarity and difference, this chapter involves a discussion of how men and non-binary skaters use names, numbers, and boutfits to express their masculinity and femininity in ways that call into question accepted gender norms. The chapter explores the ‘risk’ involved in non-normative clothing choices, but also the positive feelings associated with those choices by some participants, connecting freedom in dress with high skills capital. Additionally, the desire to create a good impression and to be inclusive is explored through a consideration of the dominant discourses within the team, which cycled between a traditional sports model (aggression, winning, etc.) and an alternative model (co-operation, community). This is linked to the concept of impression management and to acceptable masculinities. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the overall theme of image and identity as presented in the chapter, evaluating individual and collective identifications, and analysing the interplay of self and team image.
