ABSTRACT

The purpose of this workbook is to explain the techniques that are used and encountered by group members in the cognitive experiential group therapy (CEGT) model. This workbook first provides a brief overview of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychodrama, highlighting the concepts and techniques that are most relevant to CEGT session content. Next, it provides a description of CEGT and what group members should expect through their engagement in this therapy. An example of the CEGT session is then provided. The workbook then focuses on the use of CEGT with two special populations: adolescents and individuals with social anxiety disorder/social phobia. Several worksheets that are used by group members throughout CEGT are included in Appendix B.

The blending of the two models yields a complementary approach to multiple problem-solving strategies:

Both the CBT and psychodramatic models stress the discovery process through Socratic questioning. The use of certain structured CBT techniques (discussed within this manual) within the context of psychodrama provide ways to deepen self-reflection, problem-solving, and mood-regulation skills that can be rehearsed through psychodrama exercises.

Psychodramatic role-playing can provide individuals with opportunities to generate new ways of thinking and behaving. The spontaneity and creativity of individuals can be increased through the use of psychodramatic techniques, thus helping to produce alternative thoughts.

It is important to note that this workbook provides a very brief overview of the concepts most relevant to CEGT session content.
