ABSTRACT

Defining an attraction as merely a place with a specific design based on, e.g. feature films or cartoon characters, does not really do the discipline of attraction design credit, and in particular not themed attraction design. Attraction as space has its unique characteristics, such as: ‘Something that makes people want to go to a place or do a particular thing’. In the attractions industry, the recurring question is that of what the difference between an amusement park and a theme park actually is. When the attraction space is based on a coherent concept and idea, it has further depth added to it, as it becomes a themed attraction. With the primary anchoring point for the themed space being a place that is attractive to visit, it is crucial to understand the aspects of space within this context. With VR and AR being implemented at various attractions, both add a virtual dimension while arguably limiting the social interaction.
