ABSTRACT

In some ways, storytelling is a time-travelling device. It allows creators to leave their stories, fact or fiction, memory or legend to be explored and even relived by an audience for months, years, decades, centuries and even millennia in the future. In his book The Next Big Thing, William Higham states that the vital trend initiators are: Politics, Economics, Society, and Technology. Mobile devices, in particular, the smartphone, have enabled the story experience to be presented anytime, anywhere without much preparation on the part of the audience. Mobile devices are presently being used for experiences beyond the podcast, the video and the audiobook such as location-based tours, missions, quests and marketing. The storyteller aspiring to be an Integrated Storytelling designer and creator, requires an understanding of emerging technologies and their potential to be widely adopted by the audience who is capable of making an impact on storylines in particular and on storytelling in general.
