ABSTRACT

The story-experience design hybrid is evident at the heart of many upcoming, innovative concepts from the beginning. One example of story and experience being developed simultaneously is the world's first non-linear interactive dark ride Popcorn Revenge that opened in 2019 at the Walibi theme park in Belgium. To reverse-engineer and rearrange stories, first they need to be viewed as constructs based on narrative structures containing various elements such as characters, props and spaces placed in storylines moved forward by plots and subplots from beginning to end. All story creators need to be aware of the dynamic between them and their audience. The story needs to be relevant to the audience, not just in an overall way, such as general issues most people will agree on by default, but on a personal level. The events endured by the characters should be framed by a believable storyworld, one that is a credible and relatable environment for the story to take place.
