ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explores issues and trends around concentration of economic and political power in the so-called neoliberal era. It demonstrates how, despite British governments’ intermittently attempting to prevent concentration at various points between 1979 and 2007, economic power has, broadly speaking, increasingly accumulated over this time. The book describes theoretical approaches to concentration and the historical perspective in Britain. It defines long-term trends in economic concentration, focusing both on structural changes and government decision-making. The book examines specific case studies of how British governments dealt with concentration. It explores, how can political economy, or theory more generally, explain the actions or results of these governments in relation to power concentration. The book proposes nationalisation and more redistribution to tackle wealth inequality.
