ABSTRACT

The script provides the structure for the entire production, and it is the bedrock the entire team consults over and over to stay on track. The playwright’s desires are not only contained in the narrative dialogue, imagery, and themes but also in the format chosen to present the narrative. Designers break down the script to focus on the structure and its contribution to the performance. A script breakdown translates into the costume scene chart that gives the costume designer an important tool for both artistic and logistical decisions. The designer documents the scope of the project through making a costume count and costume lists.
