ABSTRACT

As an improvisor, you are always feeling the right thing, the challenge is finding a way to dance with it. Here we explore the experience of becoming creatively blocked when improvising, how we can develop an understanding of what is happening and so build strategies for dealing with it when it occurs in the future. The analogy of dragons, which may scare us but are also associated with journeys into the unknown as opposed to demons which just scare us, is used to help soften our attitude towards these destabilizing improvisational events. Some scores and methodologies are introduced which are further explored in part II.
