ABSTRACT

This is an introduction to the improvisations (scores) and exercises (skills) in Part II of the book and the basic agreements that allow students to improvise safely. There is advice on how to begin a teaching session and the importance of reflexivity in teaching to determine whether what we are offering is being readily absorbed by those we teach. Some thoughts on going into undetermined situations and not always being able to come up with an answer – sharing this as part of the creative process to help students understand what it means to be an artist.
