ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an array of introductory partner and group improvisations and exercises with examples and developments showing ways that simple ideas can provide a starting point for more complex and challenging explorations. There is an emphasis on touch, breath, and spatial awareness and an account of how the first improv, stretching a point arose from the experience of a Senegalese greeting. The exercise linear pathways introduce journeys out from and back to their point of origin/impulse. Each improvisation is accompanied by options and teachers’ notes, and there are examples of how the improvisations have been used in practice.
