ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by explaining why so many of the improvisations are carried out without music. It goes on to introduce live music and a series of improvisations that allow musicians and dancers to engage in a dialogue (rather than accompaniment). The improvisations are based around ‘calling’ or using sound and silence to attract dancers across space. There are examples of how this has been used and options for working with deaf and blind students. The chapter concludes by looking at using sound in opposition, or how dancers improvising can break away from predictable outcomes.
