ABSTRACT

This chapter invites us to re-examine what we call ‘mistakes.’ If some of the most exciting moments in improvisations arise from accidental occurrences or misjudgements, how do we respond to a student who appears to ‘get things wrong’ without reinforcing so many of the negative messages conveyed in formal (dance) education? There are some practical pedagogic strategies, real-life examples of ‘errors’ in improvised performance and a reflection on the notion of grace in the improvisers tool kit as an effective response to the unknown.
