ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the question, "How do I know what I will teach". When teachers think about what students will learn, and how they will teach, they are thinking about the curriculum. Curriculum includes the expected learning outcomes of the classroom, the content students will learn, and the lesson plans that provide detailed description for each class period. The formal curriculum consists of all that teachers purposefully intend for students to learn. This is also referred to by some as the intended, planned, explicit, or official curriculum. The delivered curriculum is also known as the taught curriculum, and can be thought of as the instructional processes or methods used to communicate the formal curriculum. The learned curriculum is a representation of all that a student learns in school. The hidden curriculum can be thought of as part of the delivered and the learned curriculum but is worth mentioning separately.
