ABSTRACT

Teachers assess students to understand what knowledge, skills, and even dispositions have been learned. Assessments also allow teachers and students to have insights into areas that still need to be learned. Assessments need to be observable, but they do not always need to be graded or quantified into points. Learning is assessed using a variety of approaches. Daily learning targets are lesson-sized observable and measurable statements of students’ learning. Student-centered learning and teaching also means that learning is active and hands-on, and authentic in terms of how students might use content and skills outside of the classroom. Long-term and short-term targets will need to be restated or revised if students need repeated assistance learning a skill or understanding a concept. The cognitive domain addresses the thinking skills and academic content to be learned in the classroom.
