ABSTRACT

Governance, structure of organization and managing the capabilities of colleges and universities are an important part of China’s comprehensive reform of higher education. Over a period of time, Chinese universities have drawn considerable autonomy and support from the government. China thus entered the phase of massification of higher education from the mid-1990s. The main concern was to sustain and improve the quality and standards of education and research. China’s higher education has emerged as one of the largest in the world with its massive increase in graduate enrollments and production of doctoral students. Most importantly, the contribution of higher education has been in the production of human capital and skills that power China’s gigantic manufacturing sector. The main objective of this chapter is to explore the growth and contemporary structure of higher education, reform measures at improving quality and teaching excellence and internationalization of universities in China in the last couple of decades.
