ABSTRACT

Internationalization and globalization have provided an important pathway for universities, particularly the faculty and students, to enhance reputation and professional standing toward international visibility. The Chinese government through various policy measures and higher educational programs has promoted various elements of internationalization and mobilization of talents over the last 15 years. Together with a rapid increase in R&D investments, establishment of S&T infrastructure and specific higher education policies to develop research intensity in the university sector, Chinese universities attained world-class university rankings. Some leading Chinese universities have opened offshore campuses and collaborative projects in the last decade. These institutions have been part of China's internationalization and globalization of higher education. Another important feature of Chinese internationalization has been the rise of big science and high technology innovation in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Guangdong provinces. In several ways, these centers attracted expatriate Chinese faculty and scientists to take the responsible positions to develop world-class laboratories such as Beijing Genome Institute at Shenzhen.
