ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to reflect on the emotional aspect of the experience of international PhD students by focusing on various incidents experienced by them. This is followed by a more comprehensive discussion of research findings and literature on emotional challenges in supervising PhD students. The chapter will then offer an alternative framework for thinking about handling the emotional challenges that commonly arise among these students. To enjoy a PhD journey, a bumpy road with a lot of jolts and jerks, emotional resilience, the ability to “find benefits within adversity,” can be achieved in many ways, such as humour or laughter; expressing appreciation, love and gratitude; and effective problem-solving (Fredrickson, 2003). It is up to students to seek resilience inside themselves or seek support from outside sources to promote their emotional well-being.
