ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on coming en garde with the single rapier. The elements of proper en garde placement provide the springboard from which both the offensive and defensive actions of the rapier may be executed. Key sections include five basic guard positions (with variations), keeping proportion/contra posturas, establishing measure, changements (disengage, coupé, etc.), ARC (Action-Reaction-Completion) and numerous technique exercises. Companion website materials are provided, offering additional instruction and techniques. Online Video Assistance (OVA) is also available to supplement the chapter’s written descriptions and illustrations.
